Formula 1 fans have not reacted well to news of Daniel Ricciardo’s departure from McLaren, taking to social media to defend the popular Australian.
McLaren confirmed Formula 1’s worst-kept secret on Wednesday, announcing that the 33-year-old would leave the team after the end of the 2022 season.
Ricciardo took McLaren’s only race win in 10 years after triumphing at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, but a disappointing 2022 – in which he recorded just four top 10 finishes – saw the team wield the axe.

McLaren are plotting a swoop for Ricciardo’s compatriot Oscar Piastri, but Formula 1 fans are still reeling from the Woking team’s decision and have pointed to Lando Norris’ record – that he hasn’t won no victories after three years with the team – to suggest they made the wrong call.
“He was better than Lando Nowins (Norris) that’s a steal!” a fan posted on Twitter.
“He’s bigger than McLaren,” said another. A third posted: “And now McLaren can go to hell with this Lando Nowins.”

He was outclassed by Lando Norris, although the Aussie took a rare race win
A fourth fan said: “He’s won more races than Norris, but this team loves Lando and gives Ricciardo some shitty strategies.” I think it’s a good thing for him, he should go to a team that chooses the best driver.
“Well he’s bigger than McLaren,” another fan posted. “They keep favoring the Lando season flop for no reason.”
“As an honest McLaren fan, I’m very disappointed!” said a sixth. “We are letting go of our best driver and only winner of the race, Daniel Ricciardo.
Fans took to Twitter to defend Ricciardo and point out Norris didn’t win in Formula 1
“He is much better than Lando Nowins and deserved better. I will no longer support the McLaren F1 team. To be ashamed.’
Another fan posted: “Really a shame it didn’t work out for him at McLaren.” I really hope he stays in F1 and proves the doubters wrong. He’s still a great driver.
Ricciardo is determined to stay in F1 in 2023, with the Australian linked with a stunning return to Alpine. Alfa Romeo, Haas and Williams are also options, with all three teams yet to sign their second driver for next season.
