House of the Dragon Power Couple Featured Properly in Episode 2

Dragon HouseThe first episode had a lot to set up. There are current and former kings, a multitude of possible heirs, a battle for succession, and a prince so sad he couldn’t even have fun at an orgy. So it’s excusable that the pilot couldn’t devote much time to Corlys Velaryon and Rhaenys Targaryen, the kingdom’s tallest and shortest couple.

In fact, if one of the characters in Dragon House might deserve their own prequel shows, these are the two. So, in case the show never makes time for their story, here’s a bit more about Corlys Velaryon and Rhaenys Targaryen and why they’re both so cool.

Who is Corlys Velaryon?

Ser Corlys Velaryon is a member of House Velaryon, one of the oldest and staunchest allies of the Targaryens, and one of the few Houses in Westeros who can claim Valyrian blood – despite not being Horsemen of dragons. Despite the house’s vaunted place in Westeros, it was not among the wealthiest or most important houses in the Seven Kingdoms until Ser Corlys took over. The Velaryons have always been renowned for their naval prowess (often serving as master of ships for their Targaryen kings), but Lord Corlys pushed seafaring further than anyone else in his family.

In his youth, long before he became master of Driftmark, the family seat of House Velaryon, Corlys sailed the seas on a ship known as the Sea Snake – earning him the nickname he has kept the rest of his life. Aboard the Sea Snake, Corlys sailed through the known world. These adventures would later be mythologized as “The Nine Voyages” and would take him to the strangest and most superstitious corners of the world. Ultimately, however, Corlys’ main contribution to these voyages was 14 ships full of treasure and gold from Essos which helped make his house one of the wealthiest in Westeros.

After his travels, when he became Master of Driftmark – a position also known as Lord of the Tides – Corlys married Rhaenys Targaryen and began his service to the Iron Throne, including assisting Rhaenys’ father Aemon , to wage war against the Myrish, and eventually served on the small council as Master of Ships, where we join him in Dragon House.

Rhaenys Targaryen is the daughter of Aemon Targaryen, granddaughter of Jaehaerys Targaryen and at one time one of the potential heirs to the Iron Throne. However, at the Great Council of 101, the kingdom chose to place her cousin Viserys on the throne instead, setting the precedent of male succession in Westeros and dooming Rhaenys to the fate of forever being called “The Queen Who never was”.

As well as harboring righteous anger at the denial of her claim to the Seven Kingdoms, Rhaenys is also a fierce rider of dragons whose dragon is Meleys, and she is equally at home in armor as she is in court dress. .

The couple also have two children, Laenor and Laena, who are both dragon riders. Without going into the details of the story to come, all four will have a very important role to play as Dragon House marches towards its inevitable and violent conclusion.
