In a statement, Rajan said: “Being asked to host my favorite TV program is dream territory come true. I watched College Challenge obsessively for years, addicted to its high standards, glorious title track and inspirational competitors.

“It’s the best possible antidote to cynicism about young people, allowing millions of us to test our wits against the best minds of a new generation, and bore and impress our families by barking answers from the couch.”

In addition to mentioning College ChallengeFirst host of Bamber Gascoigne, who died earlier this year, Rajan said he was aware of the responsibility of succeeding Paxman.

He also paid a poignant tribute to his late father, saying he will dedicate his first “Starter for 10” question to him.

“I have vast shoes to fill,” Rajan’s statement continued. “With his immense intelligence, his authority and the respect of students and viewers, Jeremy delivers a stronger format and spectacle than ever before.

“I will not stop thinking today of my late, beloved dad, whose devotion to education brought him to England, whose love of knowledge I absorbed as a child and whose belief in the noble challenge of college has shaped my life so much.

“I will dedicate my first Starter for 10 to him – and to the millions of quiz lovers who, like me, love those rare occasions when they know the answer before the students.”

Kate Phillips, director of BBC’s Unscripted, added: “College Challenge is an incredibly important staple of our entertainment lineup as it continues to entertain, challenge and educate audiences.

“We are delighted that Amol has agreed to be the new host. Jeremy leaves a very big chair to fill, but Amol’s experience, expertise and sense of humor make him the perfect candidate to one of Britain’s oldest and toughest trivia games.

“If prospective student applicants think they will have an easier ride with Amol taking over, they can think again!”

College Challenge airs on BBC Two and streams on BBC iPlayer.
