Night elves have been part of the Warcraft universe for Warcraft 3, and they are the source of all elves. It is one of the most popular factions in World of Warcraft, and they have a rich history and tons of lore for fans to peruse and explore. But the faction has also taken a beating in recent years, as civilization has struggled to maintain a home in the turbulent world of Azeroth.
With the Dragonflight expansion currently in alpha, fans are hoping for a better outcome for the night elves. But recently, a text extracted from the data of the Dragonflight alpha sent ripples through the fandom as it suggests there could be more tragedy to come. Namely, that Malfurion Stormrage can be put on a metaphysical bus to the Shadowlands, severing it – again! – of his love, Tyrande Whisperwind. The two haven’t had much peace or real character development together – and they might not, if the story currently on Test Realms comes to fruition.
The story is, of course, subject to change; because it is in alpha, nothing is fixed. And a group of avid fans have taken to social media to share their love for the night elves in hopes they can help light a brighter path for their beloved characters.
Ammatice, a Russian artist, tweeted #MightofNightElves in an effort to rally support for the faction. And fans took to the hashtag to share awesome fan art and cosplay. “I started playing in 2008 when my brother put burning crusade expansion,” Ammatice told Polygon via Twitter posts. “I still remember that moment when I saw Teldrassil with the music in the background.”
Ammatice was drawn to the beautiful elves and their magical forest creatures, and it inspired her to create fan art of the faction. “It’s amazing how night elves are made up of different ideas,” she said. “The architecture and lifestyle that combines both ancient Greek and Asian styles, the worship of the goddess and nature, an Amazon-like army of sentries, special detachments of guardians , aristocrats obsessed with magic and power. So many amazing ideas, sometimes opposite, which combine perfectly with each other.
Drekky, a Russian artist and night elf fan, also shared his appreciation with Polygon. “Meeting the Night Elves Warcraft 3 made me fall in love with them instantly! they said via Twitter messages. “They incorporated everything I love about fantasy races, with their whimsical forests, a mix of arcane and druidic magic, and an interesting matriarchal society, something I didn’t expect to see at the time. I spent hours and hours playing night elves back then, playing out my own RP scenarios of glorious Kaldorei and their animal friends.
For those fans, watching the history of the night elves move forward World of Warcraft had ups and downs. The Fire of Teldrassil was a disastrous depression; the event in the story included the genocide of the night elves and the burning down of their World Tree house, and it was largely depicted through the eyes of the authors. There has been no real justice for Teldrassil, and a recent trove of data suggests that the night elves may suffer more casualties in the future. While all alpha content is subject to change, some players are pessimistic.
“Shadowlands ended on a note of renewal, and that’s where I expected the story to go – a time of peace and restoration for the night elf genre,” says artist Lemongrace. and World of Warcraft community player. “Instead, we are almost taunted with more losses. Legion was when night elf content peaked for me, and while some of the decisions made back then were discussed at length in the night elf communities, I still think it was a treat to play there as an elf. [Night Elf] player. To say it was a descent from there is to put it mildly.
“I want Blizzard to appreciate this whimsical race of magical and savage matriarchal elves, full of different cultures and a love for nature, something that brought together so many fags, women, and POCs!” writes Drekky. “I want Blizzard to love and cherish them, sharing some of that love in-game for once since Warcraft 3.”
Lemongrass and others who share artwork via #MightofNightElves, agree. As she says, “Many of the night elf players I’ve met throughout my WoW journey have been some of the most passionate people with a deep connection to their characters and the story, and that race. that they have created has inspired so much creativity. works and has delighted people for years – that’s what I love about night elves and the elf community. I only wish they shared that passion with us and listen to feedback regarding the direction of the story.
